Syria chemical attack has changed Donald Trumps view of Assad

Syrian children receive treatment at a hospital following a suspected toxic gas attack in Khan Sheikhun.

When asked if the chemical weapons attack on Khan Sheikhun had crossed a red line, Trump said: “It crossed a lot of lines for me. When you kill innocent children, innocent babies, babies, little babies, with a chemical gas that is so lethal – people were shocked to hear what gas it was. That crosses many, many lines, beyond a red line, many, many lines.”
Pressed whether he would consider military intervention to remove Assad, the US president replied: “I’m not saying I’m doing anything one way or another, but I’m certainly not going to be telling you … Militarily, I don’t like to say where I’m going and what I’m doing.”
The British prime minister, Theresa May, currently in Saudi Arabia, said the UK would call for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to investigate. “I’m very clear there can be no future for Assad in a stable Syria, which is representative of all the Syrian people and I call on all the third parties involved to ensure that we have a transition away from Assad,” she said. “We cannot allow this suffering to continue.”
Earlier, Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, warned Russia it “cannot escape responsibility” for the attack. Addressing the security council, Haley said it was clear that Assad, Russia and Iran had “no interest in peace”.

The emotive speech, during which Haley stood up to display pictures of children killed in the attack, was as harsh in tone as anything delivered in the same forum by her predecessor, Samantha Power.
In contrast, the US secretary of state has remained largely silent regarding the attack. Rex Tillerson issued a statement critical of the Assad regime and Russia on Tuesday evening but dodged an opportunity to make his point in person in front of cameras

But it is far from clear how much sway either Haley or Tillerson has on foreign-policymaking in an administration being rocked by a power struggle among White House factions.
Last week, Haley said removing Assad was no longer a US priority, in line with the White House emphasis on attacking Islamic State (Isis).
But on Wednesday, Haley suggested that if the UN security council remained deadlocked on responding to war crimes in Syria, the US might act unilaterally somehow to stop further chemical attacks by the Assad regime.

“When the UN consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states when we are compelled to take our own actions,” she said.
Like Trump, she did not say what kind of action the US and its allies might take.
Haley spoke immediately after the deputy Russian envoy, Vladimir Safronkov, who claimed that a Syrian regime airstrike on an opposition warehouse had hit a rebel chemical weapons facility.
Haley was scathing in her rejection of the Moscow version of events, and noted that the investigation that had been set up by the security council had found clear evidence that the Syrian regime was responsible for earlier chemical weapon attacks.
“Time and time again, Russia uses the same false narrative to deflect attention from their allies in Damascus,” Haley said. “Time and time again, without any factual basis, Russia attempts to place blame on others.”
Safronkov had suggested the timing of Tuesday’s attack was intended to disrupt Russian-led peace talks in Astana, Kazakhstan. Haley responded by saying that real progress toward a peaceful settlement was being undermined by the Syrian regime and its backers.
She added: “There is an obvious truth here that must be spoken. The truth is that Assad, Russia and Iran have no interest in peace.”
Speaking in Brussels, where he is attending an international aid conference, the British foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, said all the evidence pointed to the responsibility of the Assad regime and stepped up calls for a political transition in Syria, without specifying how this might happen.
“Objectively, I simply don’t see how Bashar al-Assad can remain in charge after what he has already done,” the foreign secretary said. “Of the 400,000 who are estimated to have been killed in Syria, he is responsible for the vast majority of that butcher’s bill. And you have to go a long way back in history to find a tyrant who has stayed in office given such circumstances.”
Johnson called on all members of the UN security council to support a resolution, drafted by the UK and France, denouncing the chemical weapons attack.
“I hope absolutely everyone feels able to support it, because all we are saying is that there should be condemnation of that chemical weapons attack, and secondly that there should be a thorough and urgent international investigation. And I don’t think anybody could possibly, reasonably oppose such a resolution in all conscience.”
The Turkish leader, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a staunch critic of Assad for much of the war, condemned him and the international community and described those who had been killed as “martyrs due to chemical weapons”.

Theresa May meeting Donald Tusk for Brexit start talks

Theresa May and Donald Tusk at Downing Street in September 2016

Prime Minister Theresa May is meeting European Council President Donald Tusk later to discuss the start of Brexit negotiations.
It comes after Mrs May formally triggered two years of withdrawal talks when she invoked Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty last week.
Mr Tusk has made it clear he is seeking a fair settlement.
But he has warned the Brexit negotiations could become "confrontational" at times.
Speaking at the launch of the Conservatives' local election campaign in Nottinghamshire, Mrs May said: "We've said very clearly we want to maintain a deep and special partnership with the EU.
"And I think that has been reciprocated and I'll be talking with President Tusk [about] how we can ensure within the timescale that we've got that we deliver a deal that is going to work for the people of the United Kingdom.
"I believe that will also be a deal that will work for the EU as well."

NASA Space Launch System’s First Flight to Send Small Sci-Tech Satellites Into Space

EM1 SLS Launch Animation

The first flight of NASA’s new rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), will carry 13 CubeSats to test innovative ideas along with an uncrewed Orion spacecraft in 2018.
These small satellite secondary payloads will carry science and technology investigations to help pave the way for future human exploration in deep space, including the journey to Mars. SLS’ first flight, referred to as Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), provides the rare opportunity for these small experiments to reach deep space destinations, as most launch opportunities for CubeSats are limited to low-Earth orbit.
“The 13 CubeSats that will fly to deep space as secondary payloads aboard SLS on EM-1 showcase the intersection of science and technology, and advance our journey to Mars,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Dava Newman.

The secondary payloads were selected through a series of announcements of flight opportunities, a NASA challenge and negotiations with NASA’s international partners.
“The SLS is providing an incredible opportunity to conduct science missions and test key technologies beyond low-Earth orbit," said Bill Hill, deputy associate administrator for Exploration Systems Development at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “This rocket has the unprecedented power to send Orion to deep space plus room to carry 13 small satellites – payloads that will advance our knowledge about deep space with minimal cost.”
NASA selected two payloads through the Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships (NextSTEP) Broad Agency Announcement:
  • Skyfire Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Denver, Colorado, will develop a CubeSat to perform a lunar flyby of the moon, taking sensor data during the flyby to enhance our knowledge of the lunar surface
  • Lunar IceCube - Morehead State University, Kentucky, will build a CubeSat to search for water ice and other resources at a low orbit of only 62 miles above the surface of the moon
Three payloads were selected by NASA’s Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate:
  • Near-Earth Asteroid Scout, or NEA Scout will perform reconnaissance of an asteroid, take pictures and observe its position in space
  • BioSentinel will use yeast to detect, measure and compare the impact of deep space radiation on living organisms over long durations in deep space
  • Lunar Flashlight will look for ice deposits and identify locations where resources may be extracted from the lunar surface
Two payloads were selected by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate:
  • CuSP – a “space weather station” to measure particles and magnetic fields in space, testing practicality for a network of stations to monitor space weather
  • LunaH-Map will map hydrogen within craters and other permanently shadowed regions throughout the moon’s south pole
Three additional payloads will be determined through NASA’s Cube Quest Challenge – sponsored by NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate and designed to foster innovations in small spacecraft propulsion and communications techniques. CubeSat builders will vie for a launch opportunity on SLS’ first flight through a competition that has four rounds, referred to as ground tournamentsleading to the selection in 2017 of the payloads to fly on the mission.
NASA has also reserved three slots for payloads from international partners. Discussions to fly those three payloads are ongoing, and they will be announced at a later time.
On this first flight, SLS will launch the Orion spacecraft to a stable orbit beyond the moon to demonstrate the integrated system performance of Orion and the SLS rocket prior to the first crewed flight. The first configuration of SLS that will fly on EM-1 is referred to as Block I and will have a minimum 70-metric-ton (77-ton) lift capability and be powered by twin boosters and four RS-25 engines. The CubeSats will be deployed following Orion separation from the upper stage and once Orion is a safe distance away. Each payload will be ejected with a spring mechanism from dispensers on the Orion stage adapter. Following deployment, the transmitters on the CubeSats will turn on, and ground stations will listen for their beacons to determine the functionality of these small satellites.

MISSING MH370: This theory CAN SHOCK everyone

THE fate of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has perplexed the world for more than three years... but now an outlandish theory claims it could shed light on what happened.

MH370-Aliens

Some conspiracy theorists claim the lost plane could have been taken by aliens and even zapped through a space/time portal.
The speculation of extraterrestrial involvement in the disappearance of the aircraft three years ago is the most bizarre explanation yet for the sudden vanishing.
The flight, carrying 239 passengers and crew was last seen on March 8, 2014 after the Boeing 777 took off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing, in China.
After an hour into the flight, all radar contact was lost as the jet flew northeastwards over the Gulf of Thailand.
British UFO expert Nigel Watson revealed details of the bizarre conspiracy theory in an article on omni.media.
He looked at the various conspiracy theories which range from hijacking by terrorists or cyber criminals to a cockpit fire or other fault, being gunned down or pilot suicide.

Math Teacher Impresses Students With Most Genius April Fools Prank

Amidst the traditional slew of fake pregnancy announcements and social media jokes in celebration of April Fool’s Day, this math professor’s scheme is being hailed as the best holiday prank on the internet today.
Matthew Weathers impressed his class on April 1st by “accidentally” getting marker on his projector screen.

When he can’t seem to rub it off, he goes to Youtube to find a how-to video explaining how to remove the marker.
The class is surprised to find a video of Weathers himself, transcending internet barriers to assist his future self in removing the stain.
The trippy prank goes on to involve real-life Weathers and internet Weathers using cleaning fluid, cats, and lightsabers to try and fix the marker.
It must have taken a massive amount of elaborate video editing to execute the scheme, because Reddit users have since started begging the professor to make a “Behind the Scenes” video explaining how he did it, which he says he will do in the coming weeks.
